FÚRIA (2024)

COMMISSIONED BY ROCTET

FOR STRING OCTET - 5'

FÚRIA for string octet was composed especially for Dutch ensemble Roctet, a newly formed ensemble comprised of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra’s leading string players. The work explores themes of rage, mayhem and acrimony, achieved through relentless increase in density, tempo and ferocity. Archie was selected as one of three Royal Conservatoire students to collaborate with the ensemble.

Premiere by Roctet at Uilenburgersjoel, Amsterdam  (June 2024)

WITH HIDDEN NOISE (2024)

FOR SOPRANO, PERCUSSION AND ELECTRONICS - 6'

Written for Royal Conservatoire The Hague's 2024 Spring Festival, ‘With Hidden Noise’ for soprano, percussion, keyboards and live electronics responds to Henry Duchamps’ readymade artwork of the same title. Crafted in 1916, the work was a collaborative exercise, completed with the assistance of Walter Arensberg. Duchamp instructed Arensberg to loosen the screws holding a small brass construction together, place a small object inside, and not inform him or anyone else what it was. When shaken, a metallic rattle is heard, leaving Duchamp to famously quote ‘I will never know whether it is a diamond or a coin’. The work also incorporates poetry penned by Australian poet Evelyn Araluen, rooted in fragmented engravings carved into the body of Duchamp’s original artwork.

Performance by Lotte Cornel, Vicente Noronha, Aleksandr Zavialov, Boldizśar and Archie Tulk, at Amare Den Haag  (April 2024)

THE GOLDILOCKS ZONE (2022)

PROGRAMMED BY THE POLISH CHILDREN'S FUND

FOR TRUMPET AND HARPSICHORD - 5'

‘The Goldilocks Zone’ for trumpet and harpsichord was written for a first year assessment at Sydney Conservatorium. Written in a rough sonata form, the three distinct sections of the work depict contrasting stages of ‘the goldilocks zone’ concept. The piece's development shifts a quarter tone down in pitch, achieved through prepared altered tuning of the harpsichord's upper manual, and through adjustment of the trumpet’s tuning slide.

Performance by Bruce Hellmers and Liam Green at Sydney Conservatorium (May 2022)

WORLD ENOUGH, AND TIME (2024)

FOR SOLO VIOLA AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA - 13'

Had we but World enough, and Time

This coyness Lady, were no crime.

‘World Enough, And Time’, for solo viola and chamber orchestra intricately and flamboyantly orchestrates, interprets and elucidates the multifaceted and contentious prose of seventeenth-century English poet Andrew Marvell, specifically the opening lines of his renowned metaphysical poem ‘To His Coy Mistress’. The poem details the account of a man’s infatuation with a prospective lover, but when his advances are reticently, and in his interpretation, coquettishly denied, he reveries that human life is transient, and although he longs to spend centuries admiring her beauty, they must enjoy each other imminently. As romantic and idealistic as it initially reads, some analyses concur that the narrator's musing words serve only to dishonestly persuade and coerce the woman into agreement, illuminating a much darker and disconcerting reading of Marvell’s carpe diem prose. Foregrounded by this juxtaposition of interpretations, ‘World Enough, And Time’ starkly explores and critiques the narrative and thematic characteristics of Marvell’s work.

PIXIES (2025)

ELECTRONIC TRACK AND MUSIC VIDEO - 2'

PIXIES pays homage to the fairytale magic of home and the intangible connections that keep its essence alive, even from afar. Infused with shimmering textures and a sense of wonder, the piece evokes a dreamlike state where cherished moments with loved ones feel both fleeting and eternal. The title reflects the playful, almost mythical nature of these memories. Like pixies, they flit through the mind, elusive yet deeply grounding. This track captures the joy of remembering and the bittersweet ache of longing for the familiar, wrapped in a euphoric embrace of rhythm and melody.
